Mariah Carey, born on March 27, 1969, in Huntington, New York, is an iconic pop and R&B singer known for her impressive five-octave vocal range. Influenced by her mother, a former opera singer, Carey began writing songs in high school. After moving to New York City, she worked as a backup singer before being discovered and signed by Tommy Mottola of Columbia Records in 1988.

Her debut album in 1990 produced four number-one singles, launching her into stardom. Carey has since become one of the best-selling music artists of all time. She has two children with her second husband, Nick Cannon, from whom she divorced in 2016.
