Mariah Carey, born on March 27, 1969, in Huntington, New York, is an iconic pop and R&B singer known for her impressive five-octave vocal range. Influenced by her mother, a former opera singer, Carey began writing songs in high school. After moving to New York City, she worked as a backup singer before being discovered and signed by Tommy Mottola of Columbia Records in 1988.
Her debut album in 1990 produced four number-one singles, launching her into stardom. Carey has since become one of the best-selling music artists of all time. She has two children with her second husband, Nick Cannon, from whom she divorced in 2016. Throughout her career, Carey has won numerous awards, including five Grammy Awards, 19 World Music Awards, 10 American Music Awards, and 15 Billboard Music Awards.
